about

This was a song that was supposed to be on my Soundchanneler LP, but didn't make it. It's a song that pays homage to both the person I believe to be one of the greatest emcees/ lyricist of our time, Mr. Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr. aka Common and his classic Hip Hop song, I Used to Love Her. Some people felt like it was sort of a “passé” kind of song to do considering Common already made a song similar to it.

I vehemently disagree.

In retrospect I felt the topic Common addressed in his version of the song still exists in today’s world of Hip Hop. It was our way (Ms. Stress and I) of saying to folk that the same problems that exist in Hip Hop back then (1994 was the release year of I Used To Love Her) still exist in the world of rap today.

It was also our way of saying thank you to Common for creating a song that’s nothing less than genius. We love the song and his body of work so much we decided to name it after him. In our version we wrote it as a letter of apology to Hip Hop, thus presenting Ms. Stress as the personification of Hip Hop and me as the letter writer. She even responds to my letter in her verse (“Dear Sean-Toure’, I got that letter that you sent boo”). The concept of writing a letter seemed intriguing to me considering it seems to be such a forgotten art form in today’s world of emails, cell phone text, and instant messaging.

I produced the track and we got the homie J. Soul to come thru and lace the chorus. We hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for listening and downloading this song.
